If you haven’t yet done so, may I recommend you consider installing the Akismet and Comment Timeout plugins? Spam commenters suck, and those have cut it WAY down for me.
I have Akismet running, but I also have it set up so that every comment has to be approved before it appears, so that should cover it 🙂

Good catch! I was sure I unchecked that option, but it was checked. It’s in effect now (I’m not logged in at the moment). If it reverts, then I’ll have to see what would be causing that.
